Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction is a procedure performed to repair a torn ligament in the knee. The procedure involves the use of an arthroscope that allows visualization of the interior of the joint.

The procedure is performed as an outpatient at Randolph Hospital. The type of anesthesia may vary among different patients. You will discuss this with the doctor that specializes in anesthesia prior to your surgery.

You will likely go home the same day as your surgery. Following the procedure there will be a dressing applied. It is not unusual for this dressing to become blood stained over the 1st day. Almost all of this is salt water that was put in the knee during surgery and is tinged with a small amount of blood. The dressing should be removed the day following surgery. A shower can be taken at that time.

Ice packs should be applied to the knee 15 minutes out of each hour while awake for the first 2-3 days or until the swelling subsides. This is the most important factor for pain control and control of swelling. Elevation is also beneficial, especially if the swelling is excessive.

A medication for pain will be prescribed at the time of surgery. This is a narcotic such as Hydrocodone or Oxycodone. You can expect some nausea and in some people this can be extreme. If you need to take this medication some of the nausea can be avoided by limiting activity. If over the counter medications such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, Acetaminophen or Naprosyn control your pain this is less likely to produce nausea. Also do not forget that ice is a very good analgesic (pain controller). Phenergan (promethazine) may be prescribed for the nausea and should be taken early before vomiting starts.

You will use crutches to assist walking initially. You should wear the post-op brace when ambulating. Try to maintain full knee extension when resting. Physical therapy will begin approximately 3 days after surgery. This appointment will usually be made before the surgery but if it has not been please call immediately after surgery. The therapy visits will be frequent and they will inform you about follow-up in the clinic.
