Arthroscopy of the Shoulder

Arthroscopy of the shoulder is a very common orthopedic procedure performed for various disorders of the shoulder. The procedure involves the use of a scope containing optical fibers. A camera is attached to this arthroscope and the interior of the joint is visualized. The surgeon is able to identify abnormalities in the joint and, by using small instruments, repair or removal the abnormal structure.

The procedure is performed as an outpatient at Randolph Hospital. An anesthetic is used to prevent pain and the type of anesthetic may vary among different patients. You will discuss this with the doctor that specializes in anesthesia prior to your surgery.

You will likely go home the same day as your surgery. Following the procedure there will be a dressing applied. A pain pump may also be inserted during the time of surgery which will be removed along with the dressing 2-3 days later in the office. The pain control pump will function automatically and it is not necessary to manipulate this in any way.

It is not unusual for this dressing to become blood stained over the 1st day. Almost all of this is salt water that was put in the shoulder during surgery and is tinged with a small amount of blood. After the dressing is removed a shower can be taken. Ice packs should be applied to the shoulder 15 minutes out of each hour while awake for the first 2-3 days or until the swelling subsides. This is the most important factor for pain control and control of swelling. Physical therapy will start 2-3 days after surgery in the rehabilitation department in the office.

A medication for pain will be prescribed at the time of surgery. Please refer to the specific handout regarding your pain medication. Also do not forget that ice is a very good analgesic.

Please contact the office for a follow-up appointment to be seen 2-3 days after surgery for removal of the pain pump and a follow-up visit for approximately 2 weeks after surgery for suture removal. It is a good idea to make this appointment right after surgery. The office number is 336-626-2688.
