Bursitis Pain Relief
What is Bursitis?
Like arthritis, bursitis is a painful orthopaedic condition. It occurs when a fluid-filled sac (bursa) that cushions the bones, tendons, and muscles near your joints becomes inflamed.
Typically, bursitis is caused by arthritis, injury, infection, or excessive exercise. It commonly occurs in the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee, but you can also develop bursitis near other joints that frequently perform repetitive motions, such as in your heel or the base of your big toe.
People of all ages can develop bursitis, especially if they perform repetitive motions or remain in positions that put pressure on the bursa. For example, leaning on your elbows for long periods of time, kneeling for tasks such as scrubbing floors or laying carpet, pitching a baseball or lifting heavy things over your head repeatedly can all increase your risk. Bursitis also becomes more common with aging.
Symptoms of bursitis include joints that feel stiff or achy, look red and swollen, and hurt more when you move the joint or press on it. You should consult your doctor if you suddenly have difficulty moving the joint, experience disabling, sharp, or shooting pain, are running a fever, or notice excessive redness, swelling, bruising, or a rash in the affected area.
